Vibrant

A new drug-free treatment for constipation has recently been FDA-approved

A new drug-free treatment for constipation has recently been FDA-approved.  The treatment is called Vibrant, a swallowable, vibrating capsule that is taken daily.  The results are improved symptoms among patients with chronic constipation in a randomized, controlled trial.

The method represents a mechanical approach to the treatment of constipation. The swallowable pill acts by vibrating during passage through the gut, where it is thought to augment colonic biorhythm and peristalsis. Traditional treatments, including laxatives for constipation, generally increase motility or secretion.

The studies show increase in spontaneous bowel movements, improvement in straining and overall improvement in quality-of-life scores.  The few documented side effects include mild nausea and diarrhea, but otherwise has shown no significant adverse effects.

Vibrant may not be for everyone. The initial treatment should always include a healthy diet, increased water intake and, maybe, a fiber supplement.  Of course, any warning signs of colon cancer, such as narrow stools, abdominal pain, weight loss or blood, should be fully evaluated before starting Vibrant therapy.  Also, anyone over 45 should have a screening colonoscopy.

If you think you might be a candidate for Vibrant therapy, call Advocare Colon & Rectal Surgical Specialists, and find out if this might be right for you.
