Rectal Prolapse

Rectal prolapse is a condition whereby the rectum protrudes through the anus. This condition can occur in both men & women & at any age, but more commonly effects older women. This results in rectal discomfort, anal leakage, soiling & rectal bleeding from the protruding bowel. This can also be associated with weakening of the anal sphincter muscle, which can result in fecal incontinence.

This condition often occurs often as a result of chronic constipation with straining, but may also be due to other factors should as childbirth, spinal cord injuries or genetic factors.

Although treating the constipation is an important part of the treatment, this most likely will not reverse the condition and surgery is typically necessary.

The approach to repair can be either abdominal or rectal. There are advantages & disadvantages to either approach (such as extent & recovery from surgery, recurrence) and a thorough evaluation and consideration of the general health of the patient is necessary to make a determination of which approach is best for a particular patient.

A consultation with a board certified surgeon at Advocare Colon & Rectal Surgical Specialists who is experienced in all approaches is the best option.
