Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome, also referred to as IBS, is a functional problem of the bowel. Common symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, alternating bowel habits or abdominal pain. Although it used to be called colitis (or spastic colitis), it should not be confused with Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, which are true inflammatory conditions.
There are warning signs that one should be aware of that are NOT characteristic of IBS and would warrant further testing. These include, but not limited to, blood in the stool, weight loss, fever or anemia.
